Comme la plupart des jeux universellement connus, le Backgammon a fait l'objet de plusieurs bouturages dans des cultures différentes.
Son nom a changé chaque fois, avant d'acquérir son appellation définitive anglaise, backgammon, au XVIIIe siècle. Son nom était jeu des douze lignes dans l'Antiquité, nard chez les Perses et ludus duodecim scripta chez les Romains. Appelé Tabula, lorsqu'il parvient dans d'autres pays d'Europe. Une version de ce jeu était répandue en Espagne, au Moyen Âge, sous le nom de « Jeu de table de l'Empereur ».
À travers tous ces avatars, sa structure demeure celle de ses lointaines et incertaines origines. Selon la tradition iranienne, la paternité en revient au roi Ardashir de la dynastie des Sassanides, qui régna en Perse au IIIe siècle. Par contre, dans la légende indienne, c'est un sage nommé Quaflan qui l'aurait inventé pour jouer avec le temps d'une année entière. Aussi l'échiquier comprend-il 24 points, correspondant aux 24 heures du jour. Les 12 points de chaque moitié du damier symbolisent à la fois les mois de l'année et les signes du zodiaque correspondants. Les 30 jetons représentent les jours du mois, tandis que les autres indiquent le jour et la nuit. Par ailleurs, la somme de 7 que totalisent les points figurant sur les faces opposées, représente les sept jours de la semaine, ainsi que les planètes du système solaire qui étaient alors connues.
Like most universally known games, backgammon has been carried, like a cutting, from one culture to another.
Its name changed each time, before it took on its definitive English appellation, backgammon, in the eighteenth century. In Antiquity it was the game of twelve lines; nard among the Persians; ludus duodecim scripta among the Romans. It was called Tabula when it reached other countries of Europe. A version of the game was widespread in Spain, in the Middle Ages, under the name "the Emperor's Table Game".
Through all these avatars, its structure remains that of its distant and uncertain origins. According to Iranian tradition, its paternity falls to King Ardashir of the Sasanian dynasty, who reigned over Persia in the third century. In the Indian legend, by contrast, it was a sage named Quaflan who is said to have invented it, as a way of playing with the time of an entire year. Thus the board comprises twenty-four points, corresponding to the twenty-four hours of the day. The twelve points of each half of the board stand at once for the months of the year and their corresponding signs of the zodiac. The thirty checkers represent the days of the month, while the others mark day and night. Moreover, the sum of seven formed by the pips on opposite faces of the dice stands for the seven days of the week, and for the planets of the solar system known at the time.
